Minnesota becomes the 32nd State

Posted by: | May 11, 2015

157 years ago today, Minnesota becomes the 32nd state to be added to the United States. Long the home of the Chippewa and Sioux tribes, claimed by the French in the mid 1600s, and becoming a US territory in the treaty of Paris of 1783, the area that becomes Minnesota remained sparsely populated into the 2nd half of the 19th century.  Word of the fertile prairie land and thick woodlands spread in the 1850s.  This led to a skyrocketing of the population in the 7 year period of 1850 to 1857.
